TALLADEGA, Ala. - The Florida College Men's Soccer team defeated Talladega College 2-1 in their first game of the 2023-2024 season.
Newcomer Jhon Solis scored the first goal of the match 11 minutes into the first half and was assisted by sophomore Leo Hackett. The Falcons' momentum continued through the half and the Tornadoes were only able to attempt three shots on goal, all saved by senior Markus Sundin.
Freshman Jokubas Samsonas added another goal to lengthen the Falcons' lead to 2-0, minutes into the second half. Talladega's Tyrike Andrews answered back in the 71st minute and scored the Tornadoes' lone goal of the day after Donovan Roberts received a red card.
The road match is coach David Ashwood's first win as head coach after taking over the program back in February.
"In the context of our preseason being cut short and it being the first time these players were able to play together for an entire game, we were able to show glimpses of what we want to look like as a team," said Ashwood. "When we were down to 10 men with 20 minutes left, the guys showed grit to be able to hold onto the win. I am proud of the guys and blessed to get my first win as head coach."
The Falcons will travel to Montgomery, Ala. to take on Faulkner University on Saturday, August 26 at 10am CST.
