Falcons Take Down Freed-Hardeman University
HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Florida College Falcons defeated the Freed-Hardeman Lions 83-72 in Brewer Sports Center on Friday night.
Florida College started the game up 9-2 after a DJ Doakes three-pointer. FHU promptly called for a timeout with 16:52 left in the first half. From there FHU used a 7-0 run to tie the game. Freed would take the lead by one point, 16-15 with 13:04 left in the half. This would be their last lead of the game. FC used a 9-0 run capped off by a Ray Cao three-pointer to take a 24-16 lead with just over 10 to play. FC would lead 46-37 at the half.
At the 13:57 mark of the second half, the Lions had it within three, 53-50. This was the closest they'd ever get to the Falcons the rest of the game. FC used an 11-0 run over the next 3 minutes to stretch their lead to 14. This was tied for the largest lead of the game for FC. FHU got it back to 8 a couple of times but couldn't overcome the Falcons during the final stretch of the contest.
The Falcons were led in scoring by Matt Simpson. Simpson poured in 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Chinedu Okonkwo put up 15 points and 6 rebounds. Jashavius Perdue added 12 points off the bench. Bryan Chong added 10 points off the bench as well. DJ Doakes and Phat Cleveland added 8 points apiece.
"Good win for our team tonight," said Head Coach Chase Teichmann. "We came into a tough environment against a very talented team and played well enough to get the result we wanted. I was really proud of the effort and execution. We have a great group of guys, I'm very thankful."
The win moves the Falcons to 6-0 on the season. Up next for FC is UT-Southern, formerly known as Martin Methodist College. Florida College and Martin Methodist were both members of the SSAC just two short years ago. The Falcons and Firehawks tip-off at 7 PM (ET) on Saturday evening in Brewer Sports Center in Henderson, Tenn.
