Falcons Split Pair of Games at Christian Classic
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Florida College Falcons beat the Crowley's Ridge College Pioneers on Friday afternoon, 102-93.
The Falcons survived a barrage of three's from CRC, eighteen to be exact. This was by far a season-high for opponents three's made. The 93 points allowed were also a season-worst for the Falcons. The Falcons led by as many as fifteen in the second half, after a DJ Doakes alley-oop from Phat Cleveland. CRC wouldn't go away quietly, lowering the deficit to six points late in the game.
The Falcons had six players in double figures, which is a season-high. Matt Simpson led the team with 26 points on 9-for-14 shooting. He also contributed 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Ryan Wilcox added 14 points and 6 rebounds but sustained a knee injury. Jalon Perry added 14 as well. Bryan Chong scored 12 points off the bench. Phat Cleveland put up 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Ethan Smith rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
"I'm glad we came out with a win, but the defensive effort tonight was a huge let down for us," said head coach Chase Teichmann. "We will need a much better showing tomorrow if we want to have a chance. We've got less than 24 hours to figure it out."
Freed-Hardeman 77 Florida College 65
The Florida College Falcons could not get the perfect 2-0 record in Alabama, dropping the early Saturday afternoon contest to the Lions of Freed-Hardeman University.
The Falcons trailed by 5 at the break, in a low scoring half, 34-29. The Lions were coming off a performance that saw them make 26 three's the game before. That mark is one short of the NAIA record for three's made in a game.
The Falcons did a good job limiting their three-point shooting to 8 makes on less than 24%. The offense from the day before didn't translate, however. The Falcons shot 33% from the field and only had two players in double figures. The Lions did a good job making it tough on FC most of the day, but the Falcons had a handful of good looks in the paint they would like to have back.
The Falcons were led in scoring by Matt Simpson, who's 20 points led all scorers in the game. Simpson also grabbed 5 rebounds. Ladarron Cleveland added 11 points while grabbing 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
"Disappointing to not come out on top today," stated Teichmann. "We did play better than yesterday though, especially defensively. These guys executed pretty well, especially for the short turnaround. Freed is a quality opponent that we look forward to seeing again. We have some things to build on from today."
The loss drops the Falcons to 4-3 on the young season. The Falcons get a week to prepare for their next game, as they return home to Conn Gymnasium to host Trinity Baptist College on Saturday, November 21 at 4 PM (ET). Be sure to follow FC Men's basketball on Twitter and Instagram for all updates.
