Falcons Sneak Past JUFL
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Florida College Falcons returned to the hardwood on the road after Thanksgiving break with a non-conference foe in Johnson University Florida (JUFL). The Falcons would hold off a fiesty effort by the Suns, winning 78-74.
The Falcons looked sluggish and tired in the first half. Energy and execution was poor, which led to a six-point deficit at the half.
The Suns would stretch their lead to 8 multiple times in the second half, before the Falcons ultimately made their run.
The lineup of DJ Doakes, Matt Simpson, Milz Tatum, Andrew Voss, and Stefan Nakic-Vojnovic went on a tear. From trailing by 9 to up by as many as 10 late. The Suns were stuck on 59 points for what seemed like an eternity. The Falcons turned great defense into instant offense. DJ Doakes had some timely offensive put-backs late in the game. At one point in the second half, Matt Simpson had 7 straight and 10 of 12 for FC. He led all scorers with 29 points while grabbing 5 rebounds. Stefan Nakic-Vojnovic tallied 16 points and snagged 14 rebounds to achieve the double-double. Andrew Voss had 15 points and 12 rebounds of his own for the double-double as well. Milz Tatum dished out 10 assists.
"We didn't play well for 30 minutes of that ball game, but for about 10 minutes of it, we showed what we are capable of on the defensive end of the floor," mentioned head coach Pat Todd. "If we can replicate that more going forward we will take something good from this game. Glad to get out of there with a win. They are a hungry team with some talent and it was not an easy environment to play in, hats off to Johnson."
The Falcons (5-6, 0-2 SSAC) have 11 days until their next game. They'll return home to take on NCCAA opponent Trinity Baptist College on December 14 at 4 PM.
