Falcons Run Out of Gas at Stillman
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Florida College Falcons lost 93-112 at Stillman College on Thursday night.
The final score doesn't tell the whole story of the game. After trading the lead for the majority of the first half, the Falcons took a 49-45 lead after a Matt Simpson transition bucket with 1:30 left in the half. The Tigers would rally to score the last four points of the half to tie the game up at the break at 49.
To open the second half, the Tigers went on an 18-5 scoring run to take a 13-point lead and never looked back. The Falcons struggled to get stops in the second half. When they did force a missed shot, the Tigers cleaned it up for the put-back far too often. That led to 24 offensive rebounds for Stillman, a season-high for an FC opponent.
The Falcons didn't struggle to score the ball, with six players reaching the double-figure scoring mark. The Falcons shot a terrific 51% from the field, 41% from three on eleven makes, and 71% from the foul line. The problem offensively was the 23 turnovers.
FC was led in scoring by Matt Simpson (currently leading the SSAC in scoring). Simpson stuffed the stat sheet with 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists on the night. Andrew Voss had a terrific game, scoring 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Stefan Nakic-Vojnovic added 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists. Matt McIntyre poured in 11 points and 5 rebounds off the bench on an efficient 4-of-5 from the field. DJ Doakes had his best game in a while, posting 14 points and 5 rebounds on the night. Milz Tatum rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points and 6 assists.
"I thought we had a really nice first half," said coach Todd. "In the second half they just killed us on the offensive boards. I liked what we did offensively and there is some good that can come from this game. That is a super talented opponent on the other side. We've got to bounce back in a big one on Saturday."
The Falcons (4-5, 0-1 SSAC) travel to Mobile to take on the University of Mobile on Saturday afternoon at 3 PM ET. Mobile lost a close one to Brewton-Parker College on Thursday night 76-78.
