Falcons Drop Season Opener to Point University
TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. - The Florida College Falcons squandered a 15-point first half lead, ultimately losing 79-74 to the Skyhawks of Point University.
Up 33-18 with 6:41 remaining in the first half, the Skyhawks used a 24-4 run to take a 5-point lead with 1:36 remaining in the half. The Falcons would trail by two at the break.
The second half was a back and forth affair, ultimately ending with not enough scoring from the home team.
The Falcons shot a putrid 28% in the second half, resulting in 35% for the game. Sophomore guard Matt Simpson did everything he could to bring the Falcons' a victory. He poured in 29 points and snagged 8 rebounds in 35 minutes. He shot 12-for-20 from the field and 5-for-8 from three point range. Newcomer DJ Doakes dropped 16 points and grabbed 5 boards. Milz Tatum was the only other double-figure scorer, with 11 points on a cold 2-of-13 shooting. Andrew Voss and Stefan Nakic-Vojnovic each grabbed 11 rebounds.
"We showed tonight we are a team capable of being really effective defensively," said head coach Pat Todd. "We never got in a flow offensively and that hurt us. It is a painful loss but we will come in and make the corrections we need to moving forward."
