Falcons Scorch Nets, Pound Brewton-Parker
TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. - The Florida College Falcons (11-8, 5-6 SSAC) defeated the Brewton-Parker Barons (1-16, 0-10 SSAC) in a 109-93 shootout Monday afternoon.
The Falcons made a school-record twenty three-pointers in the game! Almost as impressive, the twenty made three's came at a 51.1% clip. The Falcons also shot over 53% from the field and 81% from the charity stripe.
For the second year in a row, Kent Hegarty made eight three-pointers against Brewton-Parker College (last season on December 18, 2017). Hegarty would tally 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 8-of-13 from distance. He also added 6 rebounds. Matt Simpson poured in 19 points, all in the first half. Simpson shot 7-for-10 including a career-high in three's made (3). Stefan Nakic-Vojnovic continued to fill up the stat sheet, scoring 18 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out 4 assists. This was Nakic-Vojnovic's second double-double of the season. Jacob Roark played only 9 minutes in the first half after picking up two fouls. He was scoreless in the first stanza. The second half was a different story. Roark ripped off 18 points in the half. He also added 8 assists in the contest with 0 turnovers.
FC tied a season-low with 10 turnovers in the game.
FC never trailed in the game. They held an 18 point lead at halftime. The largest lead was 23. Brewton-Parker battled back and cut the deficit to 8 with 2:35 remaining, before losing the contest by 16.
FC took twice as many three's (20) as two's (10) in the second half. They made 12 of those 20 second half three-point attempts.
The 109 points scored is two points shy of a season-high. It is, however, a season-high for a conference game.
"That was an exciting one," mentioned assistant coach Chase Teichmann. "Anytime you make twenty three's, you're going to be tough to beat. The style of play by both teams created the perfect storm for us to get ample opportunities for clean looks from three. Credit goes to Brewton, they refused to go away. We couldn't stop them."
The Falcons begin their 7-game road trip this week, as they head to New Orleans on Thursday to take on Loyola University (6-5 SSAC). FC won the first battle against the Wolfpack in Temple Terrace, 94-85.
