Falcons Break Records, Dismantle Brewton-Parker
The Florida College Falcons defeated the Brewton-Parker Barons 99-78 on Monday in Conn Gymnasium. This was the Falcons last game before players head home to visit family during Christmas break.
Brewton-Parker College is a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference, and starting next season, will play FC twice a year. Due to NAIA rules, FC had to wait one year to be able to play the conference schedule and be eligible for NAIA postseason play.
The Falcons sent a message to the rest of the SSAC on Monday with their performance against the Barons. FC won their tenth consecutive game, which is a school record. FC made eighteen three-pointers, which is also a school record. They also tallied thirty assists in the contest, (on 34 made field goals) which is also a school record.
The Falcons started off the game extremely hot from behind the arc. They had made eight three's by the 11-minute mark in the first half. Brewton-Parker continued to make tough shots of their own to keep the game within reach until late. The teams combined to make 33 triples.
Kent Hegarty tied a season-high with 28 points and ten rebounds on the afternoon to reach the double-double. Hegarty was a scolding (8-12) from behind the arc. Speaking of double-doubles, Lynorris Hamilton continued his strong play with 10 points and eleven assists of his own. Jacob Roark had 17 points, six rebounds, and four assists on the afternoon. He sunk two more free throws to extend his perfect season from the charity stripe. Roark is now (32-32) from the foul line. Jahkeal Samuel put up 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Samuel is shooting a ridiculous 56% from three-point range on the season.
The Falcons didn't allow themselves to lose focus on a potential trap game. They moved the ball extremely well all afternoon. "When we share and shoot the ball like that, it is contagious," said head coach Pat Todd. "We had guys like Bryce passing up potential paint shots to kick out to a guy like Kent who had the hot hand all day. And Bryce was the most excited one when it went in! This was really a testament to our guys for keeping focus and winning three big games before the break, but also a really great job by our staff to put them in position to succeed. Coach Teichmann and Coach Jones work extremely hard and it pays off after games and stretches like this."
The Falcons move to 12-2 on the season. They will have a fairly long break before returning to the hardwood on January 12th and 13th versus North American University at Conn Gymnasium.
