Lady Falcons Sign Merritt Smith

The Lady Falcons volleyball team signed sophomore Merritt Smith for the 2017 season on Monday, May 9.

Coming from Plant City, Florida, Merritt felt like the community at nearby Florida College was the perfect fit for her. Merritt is a transfer student from Broward College in Davie, Florida, and will bring one year of collegiate experience to the Lady Falcons volleyball team. She has also played for Plant City High School and Synergy Volleyball Club, where she was coach by Florida College’s volleyball alumna and former assistant coach Laura Lyle.

“This is amazing,” Merritt said. “It feels just right.”

In the 2016 season, the Lady Falcons entered the national championship tournament as the second seed and won the final match in five sets, earning their third straight USCAA national championship and 11th championship in the last 15 years. The team will graduate three starting hitters as well as some of their defense at the end of this academic year, so there are several important positions to fill for next season.

Merritt will join Florida College’s team as a middle blocker while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communication. She is looking forward to being a part of the Christian environment surrounded by other students and athletes who share her faith.

“When I started looking at colleges to go to, I was looking for a Christian school,” Merritt said. “I want to be in that kind of environment with people who have the same morals as me.”
